The Mumbai Police Crime Branch arrested two more persons in connection with the Azad Maidan riots of August 11,including the man allegedly responsible for the desecration of the Amar Jawan memorial. He was nabbed from near the Nepal border in Bihar by the Crime Branch late on Monday.
The two persons have been identified as Abdul Qadir Mohammad Ansari (19) and Nadir Mohammad. The police have now arrested a total of 54 persons in connection with the case.
On Monday,the police had also moved an application in court to discharge three persons under Section 169 of the CrPC as no strong evidence was found against them.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy said Ansari was nabbed from near the Nepal border in Bihars Sitamarhi district. We received information on Monday that Ansari was trying to cross into Nepal from the border in Bihar. Ansari was nabbed late in the night and brought back to the city on Tuesday morning, said Roy. Ansari is seen in pictures of the violence while he was desecrating the Amar Jawan memorial. The hunt for the other person who is also seen desecrating the memorial is on, he said.
Crime Branch officers learnt that Ansari had escaped from the city on August 13 after seeing his photograph in the media. He escaped to Bihar and stayed with with his relatives. He was all set to cross the border when we nabbed him, said Roy.
Ansari was produced in court on Tuesday and remanded in police custody till September 4.
