A 26-year-old woman was attacked with a blade by an unidentified man while she was standing at a bus stop in Malwani Monday.

Police said the accused attacked the victim to take revenge as he was assaulted by residents after he was allegedly caught stealing her mobile phone a few days ago.

Police said Janhvi Sutar,a resident of Malwani, was traveling by bus to Malad railway station a week ago.

She did not get a seat on the bus and soon realised her mobile phone was missing.

She looked around and saw it in the pocket of a man standing in front of her.

When she confronted him,he insisted it was his phone. The woman raised an alarm and asked fellow passengers to frisk the man. Some passengers asked Sutar to dial her number from another phone.

“On dialing her number, the phone which the man had with him started ringing. The passengers beat him up,” said senior inspector A Shaikh.

The passengers planned to hand over the man to Malwani police. He,however, managed to jump out of the moving bus. “Before fleeing,he told Sutar he would take revenge,” said Shaikh.

Around 9.30 am Monday, when Sutar was walking towards a bus stop, she noticed a man pass by.

“Assuming that the man had covered his face due to heat,Sutar did not pay heed,” said Shaikh. Within minutes of her reaching the bus stop, the man, aged between 25 and 30 years, allegedly attacked her with a blade and disappeared into a bylane. The woman suffered minor injuries, police said. “A probe is on,” Shaikh said.
