A 23-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped by three inebriated men while another man in the group molested her in Kabir Nagar slum colony in Andheri East, police said. The men were arrested on Wednesday morning and remanded in police custody.
Police said the woman had, from Sakinaka, accompanied a man identified as Krishna (40) to his house in Kabir Nagar Tuesday evening.
Krishnas wife and children had gone to their native village. Between 2 am and 10.30 am Wednesday, the accused forcibly entered Krishnas home after consuming alcohol and assaulted him. They locked him up in the toilet and raped the woman at knifepoint. Krishna called police and we arrested the accused at 10.30 am, said Shashikant Talegaonkar, senior inspector,Vile Parle police station.
The accused,Mukesh Kewat (21),Mahesh Kewat (22),Rajesh Verma (22) and Ramchandra Hubey (30) were produced in Andheri Court on Thursday and remanded in police custody until March 20.
Mukesh,Mahesh and Rajesh raped the victim and Ramchandra molested her. Both the accused and the victim were sent to Nagpada Police Hospital for a medical examination. Ramchandra has several cases of robbery and attempt to murder lodged against him, Talegaonkar said.
Krishna lives in a rented room in Kabir Nagar slums near Godfrey Phillips factory on Sahar Road in Andheri East. Rajesh is a vegetable vendor and Mukesh a college student. Ramchandra is a known historysheeter.
All the four accused lived in rooms close to Krishnas. On Wednesday night, when they saw he had brought a woman home with him, they barged into his room. People in Kabir Nagar are scared to speak out against him, said a neighbour. The other neighbours are too scared to speak out.
If the families of the accused find out that we have been speaking about the incident, they will create trouble for us, said Umesh Kumar, who runs a grocery store close to where Krishna lives.
Krishnas room has been sealed.
