THE MUMBAI Crime Branch Sunday arrested a woman and three others from Malad for being involved in at least four cases of chain-snatching and robbery. This is one of the very few cases where a woman has been found to be involved in a case of chain-snatching.
Police inspector Chimaji Adhav of Crime Branch Unit 11, said they arrested 26-year-old Poonam Gurav and her boyfriend 21-year-old Dhanraj Kounder, who would roam the city looking for victims, usually old women. After narrowing down on a victim, Poonam would get off their bike and go and talk to the victim. “As the two women would be talking, Dhanraj would ride past them, snatch chain from the victim and flee from the spot,” Adhav said.
The police have found that the two are involved in at least four cases of chain-snatching and robbery. The police said that they had two accomplices: Mangesh Karelkar, 23, and Kiran Sharma, 24.
Adhav said that the four accused are residents of Malad and were all addicted to drugs. They would snatch chains during the day, sell them off and use the money to purchase drugs at night. The police suspect that they were also involved in cases of stealing mobile phones from outside Malad station as well. “While so far their involvement in only four cases of chain snatching have been found, their interrogation should reveal involvement in other cases as well,” an officer said.
The accused have been handed over to the local Malwani police station.
