V P Road police probing the murder of Aditya Ranka, the 13-year-old son of a diamond trader in May,said they would seek death penalty for the killers when the case comes up in court.

Aditya, son of Jitendra Ranka, was kidnapped for ransom and killed on May 13 by his 25-year-old cousin Himanshu Ranka and his friend Vijesh Sanghvi,28. Police said Himanshu and Vijesh had a habit of betting on cricket matches and were deep in debt.

Police said Vijesh had called Aditya’s home twice on the day of the crime and asked to meet him outside his home. Vijesh allegedly forced Aditya into his car and drove away. He made a ransom call to Jitendra, who at first dismissed it as a joke and only registered a complaint after realising that Aditya was missing.

Police said as Vijesh was driving towards Navi Mumbai,Aditya tried to escape, following which he stabbed the boy to death. He later moved the body to the boot and drove to Pali village. There,he allegedly tried to burn the body and abandoned it near a farmhouse. Himanshu stayed with Jitendra at the police station. When Vijesh reached there,Jitendra found Aditya’s sandals inside the boot. Vijesh and Himanshu were detained and later confessed.

“We are examining call detail records of the accused,” said senior inspector Rajendra Chavan.
