Ulhasnagar shuts down after ‘objectionable’ Ambedkar pic on FB

There was a shutdown in Ulhasnagar and parts of Kalyan Tuesday after a photograph of B R Ambedkar,which was considered to be objectionable,was uploaded on social networking site Facebook.

There was a shutdown in Ulhasnagar and parts of Kalyan Tuesday after a photograph of B R Ambedkar,which was considered to be objectionable,was uploaded on social networking site Facebook.

RPI activists forced shops to shut down and disrupted the transportation system demanding that the police book the offender. Several demonstrations were also held.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 6,Thane) S T Rathod said,“A case has been registered against the person who uploaded an objectionable picture of Ambedkar. While there was a shutdown in the area,no untoward incident took place. The page has also been removed.”

The Vithalwadi police registered a case against Sachin Meshram under section 295 A (deliberate outraging religious feelings) of the Indian Penal Code and 66 A (sending offensive messages) and 67 (publishing information which is obscene in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act.

Meshram’s Facebook profile,according to the police,says he hails from Madhya Pradesh.

Earlier in the day,RPI activists protested across Ulhasnagar. An autorickshaw driver was assaulted at Kalyan,said local police.

“A case has been registered against the four people who assaulted the driver,” said A P Mokashi,senior police inspector,Vithalwadi police.
