A day after a 75-year-old woman and her daughter-in-law were murdered at their home in Panvel, the police arrested two men related to the victims for the crime and are probing the reason for the murders. On Tuesday afternoon, two men entered the home of Sitabai Khutle (75) in Nandgaon village in Panvel taluka when she and her daughter-in-law, Aparna (40), were at home. Aparna’s husband, Madhukar, was away at work while her son Vineet had gone for a job interview.

The police said the accused attacked the women, slit their throats and fled. Vinod Chavan, senior inspector, Panvel City police station, said tracking the men proved difficult as sniffer dogs lost the trail after a few hundred meters. The accused, Satish Khutle (34) and Rajan Udare (38), were finally located in paddy fields in Turmale village on Wednesday night. Chavan said the accused were Madhukar’s cousins and they told the police that there was a dispute related to the farmland that he owned.
