Two students from Mittal College in Malad were killed in an accident in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali (East) after their motorcycle was hit by a vehicle hired by the police for civic elections-related bandobast duties on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Kasturba Marg police,Vinod Sachin Kashi (19) and Akshay Ashok Kadam (18) had gone for a ride to the Kanheri Caves in the national park with six other college friends on four motorcycles. Kashi was riding pillion with Kadam on his Yamaha bike. Mitesh Gurav,a friend of the deceased, said after the visit, around 1 pm they had come to the gate for water. While the others were at the meeting point at the gate,Kashi told Kadam to go back for a round. This time,Kashi said he wanted to ride the motorcycle,to which Kadam agreed and sat pillion.

Police officers investigating the case said the two residents of Charkop were allegedly speeding on the Kanheri Caves road when the accident took place.

“A Chevrolet Tavera jeep with police officers was on its way for election bandobast duty. Since the boys were speeding, they hit the jeep from which was coming from the opposite direction. The accident took place at the curve of the road where both drivers could not see each other,” claimed an officer from the Kasturba Marg police station.

The driver of the private jeep,Sunil Aangne (50),was arrested and booked for rash and negligent driving.
