AN EMPLOYEE of a businessman in Powai allegedly kidnapped his employee’s nephew for ransom, developed cold feet after kidnapping the 10-year-old boy and killed him with the help of an accomplice. A day after a missing person complaint was registered at the Powai police station, they arrested the two accused — Amar Singh (20) and Laloo Singh (21) — and recovered the Class 4 student’s body from the shrubs near Mira Road Municipal Corporation (MBMC) in Bhayandar. The fact that the boy’s sister saw the accused talk to him in the afternoon helped the police solve the case.

An officer from Powai police said that the boy, Ritesh Singh, lived with his parents and younger sister at Tunga village in Powai. On Sunday afternoon around 2 pm, the Class 4 student was at home when Amar asked Ritesh to come with him, luring him with the promise of food. Ritesh went along with him since Amar worked at the fabrication unit of his uncle located near their residence and was known to him. While Amar communicated with him discreetly and believed that Ritesh’s sister, who was in the same room, was engrossed in playing a game on her mobile phone, the sister did see Singh talk to her brother.

When Ritesh did not return home till late evening, the parents started getting worried. At this point, their daughter told them that she had seen Ritesh talk to Amar. At this point, the boy’s father, Babloo, started calling Amar frantically, an officer said. Amar, who by then had taken an auto to Andheri and a train to Bhayandar, started panicking. “He eventually answered the phone. When Babloo asked him where his son was, Singh said he did not know. When Babloo told him that his daughter had seen him going with his son, Amar claimed that he had gone to eat with the boy and had asked him to go home within an hour,” an officer said.

Babloo, however, told Amar that he should come to Tunga immediately. Amar by now had reached Bhayandar with the boy where his accomplice, Laloo Singh (21), worked. After talking over the phone, Amar realised that his game was up as Ritesh’s sister had seen him. He knew that the boy will tell his father that it was indeed Amar who had taken him along. “The duo panicked and throttled the boy to death and deformed his face with a stone. They then disposed off his body in the shrubbery near the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation,” an officer said.

In the meantime, Amar returned to meet the family and claimed he had left the boy soon after they went out to meet. The Powai police team led by senior inspector Anil Pophale, which was investigating the matter, started interrogating Amar. Eventually, he broke down and confessed to having kidnapped the boy and then murdered him, police said. “During the course of interrogation, he also gave us the name of Laloo who was his accomplice in the crime.

The duo then led us to the spot in Bhayandar from where we recovered the body. The accused had planned to call and demand a ransom of Rs 2.5 lakh,” said inspector Balwant Deshmukh. The accused were formally arrested on Tuesday.
