The Kandivali police arrested two men and detained two others for allegedly beating to death a ‘robber’ early on Saturday.

Police got a call from residents at Ekta Nagar in Kandivali (West) about a man who was found injured on the road. On reaching the spot, the officers found him in a pool of blood and an instrument used to break locks and latches in his hand.

They rushed him to Bhagwati Hospital but he was declared dead on arrival. “He had a tattoo of ‘Mahendra’ on his hand and we assumed it might be his name,” said Hareshwar Pimple, senior inspector,Kandivali police station.

He said the incident took place around 2 am on Saturday when Mahendra (25) was walking near Ekta Nagar residential complex and the accused,Sandesh Patil (27) and Rahul Pal (22),were standing outside their houses. Patil and Pal,who have a criminal background, stopped Mahendra and asked some questions. “He could not give a satisfactory reply. Patil and Pal,who are history-sheeters,also found a house-breaking instrument on him and thrashed him,” said Pimple.

Mahendra tried to escape, the duo chased and nabbed him near a parking lot. They alerted the parking lot owner Shahid and a tempo owner and told them that Mahendra had stolen a car battery from the parking lot a few days ago. They also beat him up till he began bleeding and fell unconscious. The four then fled the spot.

“We have arrested Patil and Pal for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. We have checked the record of the accused and found that Patil was externed from the city while Pal had a case of assault against him three years ago,” said Pimple. “We have detained Shahid and the tempo owner and are investigating their role.”

Police sources, however, said Patil and Pal were accomplices of Mahendra and had planned to rob the houses in Ekta Nagar on Friday night. “The residents spotted them, and to evade arrest,Pal and Patil raised an alarm and began beating up Mahendra,” said an officer.
