Truck driver held in Kurla road mishap

A 34-year-old truck driver was arrested Thursday after his truck allegedly ran over a pedestrian,killing him on the spot in Kurla.

A 34-year-old truck driver was arrested Thursday after his truck allegedly ran over a pedestrian,killing him on the spot in Kurla. The driver,identified as Sanjay Yadav,has been booked for rash driving,police said.

According to Vinoba Bhave Nagar police,the incident occurred in the Bail Bazaar area in Kurla at 10:30 am Thursday. The victim,Mario Coutinho (54),was a resident of the Jariwala Chawl in Kurla and was walking towards a grocery store in Bail Bazaar when he was run over.

“Coutinho was run over by the truck while crossing the street. The truck was being driven at high speed,” an officer with the Vinoba Bhave Nagar police said.

Coutinho was declared dead on arrival at Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar. Some of the eye-witnesses told the police that Yadav “appeared drunk” at the time of incident. While a medical report is awaited,police have ruled out inebriation prima facie.

“We have subjected Yadav to medical tests and he was not found to be drunk when the accident occurred. We have charged him for causing death due to rash and negligent driving under IPC,” Senior Inspector Subhash Raut of Vinoba Bhave Nagar police station said.
