The Oshiwara police probing the murder of Arun Tikku (62) — who was found dead at his son’s Andheri (West) apartment on Saturday night — are yet to pin the mastermind behind the crime.

On Tuesday, the Mumbai Police Crime Branch claimed to have cracked the case with the arrests of Vijay Palande,Dhananjay Shinde and Manoj Gajkosh, alleged associates of arrested gangster Santosh Shetty.

Sources in Oshiwara police said while Palande was named as the mastermind by Shinde, the former has denied that he ordered Shinde and Gajkosh to kill Tikku.

Police officers said Palande had been denying any role in the murder and instead alleged that Tikku’s son Anuj was the mastermind of the plot. Following the arrests on Tuesday, the police had stated that they were still probing whether Anuj had any role to play in the crime.

“Palande has been changing his statements and denying any role in the murder,” said Dilip Rupwate, senior police inspector of Oshiwara police station.

Officers said Anuj had been asked to rest for a few days before they question him again as he was in a disturbed state. They are not yet ruling out Anuj’s role in the murder as Palande had been blaming him.

Meanwhile, the police have conducted a panchnama at the residence of Simran,an associate of Palande through whom he allegedly got introduced to Anuj. “We have also questioned Simran’s domestic help to confirm her statement about who was visiting her house,” said an officer of Oshiwara police, who did not wish to be named.
