The Mumbai Police fortified the city on Tuesday hours before Union Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde’s body was flown to the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) head office located at Nariman Point.
Munde passed away on Tuesday morning after he met with a road accident in the national capital. Munde was admitted to the AIIMS trauma centre but succumbed to his injures .
Sources from the police department told that although Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria had ordered for traffic diversion going towards the BJP’s head office, he also ensured that it doesn’t affect routine traffic. “The security is maintained so tight by Mumbai Police that even BJP’s party workers are not allowed at certain areas,”said an official.
“The CP took a short meeting with the senior officers in South Mumbai and others were instructed to keep the tight security till Munde’s mortal remains are taken to his native place for the last rites,” said a senior officer.
“The traffic department has already been instructed to divert traffic from morning as it was informed that Munde’s mortal remains will be kept at the head office at Nariman point. The traffic is well planned as the body was to come post 5pm on Tuesday from the Mumbai airport. The small lanes have been opened up for regular traffic so as it keeps moving,” said a senior officer.
Almost all the police stations in the city have been asked for patrolling at check Nakas and other places. A senior officer is accompanied with 25 sub-ordinates at the patrolling, especially at the BJP head office. The team of anti-terrorist squad is deputed to avoid any mishaps. Along with this, state intelligence and CID officials have been asked to remain in plain clothes near the head office,”said Krishna Prakash,Additional Commissioner of Police ( South Region ).
