Kapurbawdi police, investigating the hoax call about ten “suspicious” men entering a Thane complex,Tuesday arrested the wife of main accused Durga Prasad for allegedly abetting the crime. Rinku,20,has been booked for her “silence” as she did not inform the police although she knew her husband Prasad had made the hoax call.

On Monday,Prasad had allegedly called the police and claimed to have seen ten men enter an unoccupied seven-building complex on Ghodbunder Road. After a seven-hour operation yielded no clues,Prasad confessed to having lied. The objective, police said, was to gain the upper hand in a fight with a motorist to show him his “connections” by getting policemen to rush to the spot.

Prasad and his colleagues,Sandeep Sharma and Shyam Kurmi, were booked for public mischief and providing false information to public servants.

“We learnt Prasad’s wife Rinku was with him when he had the argument with the motorist. In fact, they had just celebrated her birthday. She saw the argument and also heard Prasad make the call,” said Thane Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone V) Balasaheb Patil.

“Rinku should have realised that Prasad’s lie was going too far and could have stopped the matter from snowballing into a full-fledged operation if she wanted,” said Patil. Hence,Rinku was arrested on on Tuesday night, along with Prasad,Sharma and Kurmi.

Meanwhile, police said they examined CCTV footage of the entrance of Green Park society and obtained footage of the argument.
