Ten horse-cart drivers arrested for racing on highway

The police arrested drivers for allegedly racing their carts on the Western Express Highway in the morning.

The police on Friday arrested 10 horse-cart drivers for allegedly racing their carts on the Western Express Highway in the morning.

According to the Dahisar police, the arrests were made after the accused were spotted by zonal Deputy Commissioner Panjabrao Ugale, who was conducting night rounds in the Zone XII area. Ugale stopped them, after which the accused were taken to the police station for inquiries.

“The accused were riding the horse carts in a negligent manner on the highway. The horses were also treated cruelly. The 10 horse-cart riders were arrested and we have seized five carts and rescued 10 horses. The accused have been charged for rash and negligent driving, negligent conduct towards animals and for endangering life or personal safety of others under the IPC, along with relevant sections of the Animal Cruelty Act,” said Ugale. The horses have been sent for medical check-ups.
