The Powai police have recently sent teams to Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand to pursue leads in its probe into the death of a woman aged between 25 and 30 years, whose burnt body was found under a pipeline near the Powai-Vihar Lake on April 12. The police have, however, not been able to ascertain the identity of the victim as yet.

“We had received information from residents that a woman named Maria had left for Jharkhand from Bhandup, and wanted to ascertain if the body belonged to her. Hence,we sent a team to Jharkhand,” senior police inspector Bajirao Bhosale of Powai police station said.

According to Bhosale, the search reached a dead-end. The woman was later believed to be living in Jharkhand.

Similarly,a police team has also been sent to Uttar Pradesh to track a woman who had allegedly run away from her home with a man and settled there,Bhosale said.

“We sent the team to ascertain if she was still living there,or was missing,” said Bhosale.

With the body of the victim burnt and her face mangled beyond recognition,it is proving difficult to identify the body, the police said.

The body was brought to the notice of a resident,Vilas Shinde,by some farmers who had gone to the spot to bring fodder for their cattle. Shinde,in turn, informed the police. The police then registered a case of murder and destruction of evidence against unnamed persons. Since then, police officers have recorded the statements of several people in the area, but they are yet to make a breakthrough in the case.

They had earlier said they believed the person responsible for killing the woman may have been known to the victim . The police said that they suspected this as gold bangles were found on the victim’s hands, prompting them to rule out robbery as the motive.
