In the wake of the row over B R Ambedkar’s cartoon in National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks, the Republican Party of India (A) has demanded immediate police action against the committee responsible for defaming the Dalit icon.

“The NCERT advisors,Yogendra Yadav and Suhas Palshikar, are trying to show off their fake intellectualism by allowing such cartoons in textbooks. There should be an investigation and police case against such people,” RPI (A) leader Ramdas Athavale said on Saturday.

“I am going to meet HRD minister Kapil Sibal next week and urge him to file a complaint against the NCERT members who were involved in this,” said Athavale.

A cartoon on Jawaharlal Nehru and B R Ambedkar, first published in 1949 and reproduced in a school textbook, had set off a storm in the Parliament earlier this week, with political parties stating that it was an insult to Ambedkar. Drawn by eminent political cartoonist Shankar in 1948,it shows B R Ambedkar, chairman of the drafting committee, riding a snail with Jawaharlal Nehru standing behind with a whip in his hand. The cartoon was added to the political science textbook of Class XI called ‘Indian Constitution at Work’ in 2006.

The uproar forced Sibal to apologise to all parties. Following the uproar,Yadav and Palshikar had resigned.

RPI (A) workers have demanded that strict action be taken against those responsible for the incident. “In case the governemnt does not take stringent action, the RPI (A) will register police complaints across Maharashtra,” said Athavale.
