Tackling Overcrowding: Coupons for women commuters soon to travel in long distance trains

Only 3,000 such coupons will be sold, and priority will be given to women commuters and senior citizens.

Women commuters of Central Railways (CR) will be able to purchase coupons using which they can travel comfortably in a long distance train instead of the overcrowded locals from December 23. The initiative to allow suburban commuters to travel in long distance trains during the morning peak hours was taken after a considerable spike in the cases of commuters dying after falling from moving trains.

The proposal, sent to the Railway Board (RB) to allow commuters in the sleeper classes between Kalyan-CST and Thane-CST, has received a green signal from the board. However, only a season ticket holder will be able to avail this facility for which they will have to purchase additional coupons of Rs 10 and Rs 25. Only 3,000 such coupons will be sold, and priority will be given to women commuters and senior citizens.

Sunil Kumar Sood, General Manager of CR said, “Women commuters who wish to travel in these trains will be able to buy coupons between December 21 and 23. After this senior citizens can buy coupons between December 24 and 26 and after it the facility will be open to others.”

Sood further said allowing women commuters in the long distance trains will also fulfill the long pending demand of toilets in trains for female commuters. The three trains which the commuters will be allowed to board are Mahalaxmi Express, Devgiri Express and Latur-CST train. There will be stickers put up in the sleeper coaches of these trains.
