The five suspects in the gangrape case had similarly targeted girls two or three times in the past,Crime Branch sources said Monday.

However, none of these past incidents has been reported to the police. The suspects are believed to have clicked pictures of their victims to prevent them from approaching the police.

“We had suspected that men involved in offences like theft and dacoity would not commit such a serious crime without past experience. During interrogation, the suspects confessed that they had committed similar crimes in the past. At least one such victim is a rag picker. The suspects would also be on the lookout for couples who sneaked into the compound looking for privacy. We are verifying whether the previous crimes were cases of rape or molestation,” said a Crime Branch officer.

However,Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh said there was no complaint to indicate that they had indulged in crimes against women before this incident.

Forensic experts are now analysing arrested suspect Salim Ansari’s phone to find out if any deleted data can be retrieved.

“They told us told us of two-three instances starting from 2011. The victims in these cases did not approach the police, which gave the suspects confidence that they could get away on Thursday as well. But they did not know that the victim is a media professional and mentally very strong,” said a source.
