The 22-year-old man who was arrested for allegedly trying to pour acid into the mouth of his former girlfriend had stalked her for the past three months and tried to force her not to end their friendship, Gorai police said.

Hitendra Sakpal,a resident of Kajupada area in Borivali, was produced in court Sunday and remanded in police custody for four days.

Meanwhile, the 18-year-old girl, who has suffered burn injuries in the mouth, was shifted to a private hospital on Mira Road from Bhagwati Hospital.

The girl’s parents told police they had not approved of their daughter marrying Sakpal,a hotel management student.

The two had sought their parents’ permission to get married but the girl’s parents had refused.

The girl’s uncle said,“After her parents refused permission, the girl had asked Sakpal to stay away from her and had ended the relationship. However,Sakpal stalked my niece and even intercepted her a few times, asking her to stay friends,” said the girl’s uncle.

The girl’s family alleged that Sakpal had made several attempts to harass her after which they had approached the Dahisar police station three months ago. Police had called Sakpal and warned him to stay away. “Sakpal had apologised then and promised to stay away. However,a few days later he again approached the girl and asked her to continue to talk to him and be friends,” said the girl’s uncle.

The girl eventually agreed to be friends with Sakpal. On Saturday, she agreed to meet Sakpal once and he picked her up after she left from college. They then went to the Gorai jetty to talk about their relationship and when the victim stuck to her stand,a heated argument ensued. Sakpal pulled out a bottle containing acid from his pocket and tried to force it down her throat. However, the victim fought back and the bottle fell on the ground.

“We are trying to find out where he got the acid from,” said senior police inspector Deepak Bagwe.
