ST Andrew’s College coach Sydney Alexandras decision to replace regular goalkeeper Godswill Mergulho with teammate Siddharth Nayak in the tie-breaker after the teams were tied 1-all in regulation period paid rich dividends. In fact it proved a masterstroke.
The diminutive Nayak stood tall under the Andrews bar and made two timely saves in the crucial penalty shootout duel to help the defending champions edge out arch-rivals Rizvi College 7-6 via the sudden death and retain their title in the Goan Sports Association (GSA) organised Inter-Collegiate football tournament,at the GSA ground,Cross Maidan on Wednesday.
In a summit contest between two Bandra college teams,Rizvi took the lead when St Andrews goalkeeper Godswill fumbled with a regulation collection, which allowed Ashish Pawasker to head into an empty goal.
After the change of ends,Rizvi stopper Kazim Siddiqui in an attempt to clear away a long throw-in from Andrews defender Wayne Vaz headed the ball into his own net.
The deadlock continued in the tie-breaker as both the teams could only convert four of their attempts from the penalty spot. However,in the ensuing sudden death Andrew’s proved more successful as they scored from their first two shots, while Rizvi saw their second try taken by Kazim Siddiqui saved by an alert Nayak. And the super-sub was over the moon on his special day. So was the case with all his Andrew’s teammates as well.
Result: St Andrews College 7 (Kazim Siddiqui (OG),Scott DSouza,Elton Quadros,Dion Menezes,Dexter Rodrigues,Hyginus DSouza,Wayne Vaz) bt Rizvi College 6 (Ashish Pawasker 2,Viramallu,Marvin Stephen,Kevin Patrick,Shadaab Shaikh).
