A South African woman carrying 26 kg of methaqualone,worth Rs 13 crore,was arrested Friday at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport by officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU).
Cisse Lintel,who claimed she runs an event management firm in South Africa,was about to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight at 6 am,when AIU officials intercepted her and conducted a search.
We recovered 26 kg of methaqualone,a schedule drug,from thread rolls. Around 50 gm of the drug was hidden in 580 thread rolls, a Customs officer said. Lintel was booked under NDPS Act,and is being interrogated.
The AIU officers also arrested a Nigerian national identified as Beatrice Nene Nwaka for Customs duty evasion after she arrived from Nigeria via Dubai by an Emirates Air flight. Officials recovered gold jewellery and embroidered polyester knitted fabrics valued at Rs 35.5 lakh from her. Gold and fabrics were seized under provisions of Customs Act,1962.
In another arrest Friday,AIU officers held a man identified as Bhishamdas Jindumal Nathani for allegedly attempting to smuggle assorted gold jewellery worth around Rs 11 lakh.
The officers intercepted Nathani after he cleared the green channel on arrival from Dubai on an Indigo Airlines flight. We recovered gold jewellery worth Rs 10.8 lakh. Nathani was wearing jewellery and had concealed some in his pockets,a Customs officer said.
