A weekend trip to the beach turned tragic for a group of men from the city when six of them died of drowning after consuming alcohol. The men, all residents of Chembur, travelled to Murud- Janjira and went swimming in the beach after consuming alcohol, the police said. The others are out of danger.
Police said a group of 15 men aged in their forties set out in a bus and reached Murud-Janjira on Sunday. “They checked into Parvati Lodge and went to the beach at 11 am. Each man drank a few cans of beer before entering the water,” said an officer from Murud-Janjira police station.
“They were so intoxicated that they could not stay afloat. A few men began to shout for help,” said Sudhir Nazare, who was among a group of locals, rushed for help.
Nazare added that while a few men were able to paddle back to shore, some had gone too deep into the beach. “When we reached the beach, we found beer cans lying everywhere. We managed to rescue nine people quickly. But by the time we brought the six others to shore, they weren’t breathing. Beer was foaming out of their mouths,” he said.
“It was only after we splashed water on their faces that they could tell us what had happened,” Nazare said. All 15 men were rushed to Alibag Civil Hospital, where six were declared brought dead. The police identified them as Rohit Jhala, Vinod Ajai, Dinesh Pawar, Dilip Gole, Sanjay Panchal and Shankar Chavan. They were contractors, the police said.
A case of accidental death has been registered.
