A 42-year-old man was killed in Govandi on Wednesday afternoon after an oncoming SUV collided with his vehicle, the police said.
The accident took place on the Sion-Panvel Highway at 2 pm when the driver of a Mahindra Scorpio — travelling towards central Mumbai — lost control over the vehicle after a flat tyre.
The police said that the SUV jumped past the divider and crashed head-on with a Maruti Alto moving in the opposite direction.
Driver of Alto Vijaypal Gehlot was killed on the spot, while the three occupants of the Scorpio escaped unhurt.
The police said Gehlot, who lives in Chembur, was driving to Turbhe for an official work.
Bablu Yadav (30), who was at the wheel of the Scorpio, has been booked with rash driving and causing death due to negligence.
“Yadav was going with his wife and young son towards central Mumbai and he claimed that after his vehicle’s front tyre burst and he lost control over the vehicle,” said an official at Govandi police station.
This is the second mishap to occur in the city’s eastern suburbs in a week that has resulted in fatalities.
On Sunday morning, 35-year-old Mulund resident Lalit Jain died after his Mahindra XUV turned turtle on the Eastern Express Highway, flipped and fell onto the opposite carriageway.
The five passengers in the car, all of whom were Jain’s friends, were not seriously injured in the accident.
