A Special Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act (PoCSOA) Court Monday convicted a school bus attendant for molesting a four-year-old nursery student of a Juhu-based private school.

Ramesh Rajput (35) was sentenced to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment. Special Judge S D Tulankar also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on him. Rajput, who was arrested soon after the incident on January 15,has been behind bars since.

While Juhu police filed a 59-page chargesheet in March, with testimonies of the victim, her parents, and other children who travelled with her on the bus that day,the prosecution relied only on seven witnesses.

“The victim testified before the court and supported the prosecution’s case,” said inspector Kalpana Gadekar, investigating officer.

The prosecution took care to ensure that the child was not daunted and supported their case in the court. Unlike other cases, her statement was recorded outside the police station, where she confidently narrated the incident, said Gadekar. The child also identified Rajput in court.

According to the prosecution, the victim was the last child on the bus when Rajput molested her. A woman caretaker on the bus had seen Rajput inappropriately touch the child and “reprimanded” him. Police made her a witness in the case.
