Actor Sanjay Dutt, convicted in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case,Tuesday moved an application before the special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act (TADA) court seeking permission to surrender directly at jail instead of court. Dutt cited threat to life and claimed that media would make his transit from court to jail difficult as the reasons.
A four-week extension granted to Dutt by the Supreme Court for surrender ends May 16. However,Dutts lawyer had informed the apex court that he would surrender on May 15.
On the last occasion, when Dutt was taken from sessions court to Yerawada prison in Pune,he was hounded by television as well as newspaper journalists. This forced his driver to go at speed of 120 kmph. The vehicle almost met with an accident. To avoid such a situation, the actor has sought permission to directly surrender either at the Yerawada or the Arthur Road jail in Mumbai, Dutts lawyer Subhash Jadhav stated.
In his application,Dutt also claimed that he feared serious threat to his life from vested interest groups and other fundamental groups and organisations.
The court has kept the application for hearing Wednesday as CBI sought time to file its reply.
