Sand mafia ‘kingpin’ Appa Londhe shot dead in Pune

Police sources said Appa was operating a gang of over 50 people.

Gangster and sand mafia kingpin Prakash alias Appa Haribhau Londhe (52) was shot dead near his residence on Shindavne Road in Urali Kanchan while he was out for his morning walk on Thursday.

His son, Vaibhav Londhe (22), lodged a complaint of murder at the Loni Kalbhor police station. The police have booked unidentified people under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

As per Vaibhav’s complaint, Appa Londhe was into business of sand, stone crushing and farming. Appa’s brother Vilas Haribhau Londhe was murdered following a past rivalry in 2002.

The 10 accused convicted for this murder are at present out on bail. The case is going on in the Bombay High Court.

Vaibhav said the accused were keeping a watch on his father’s movements. “Appa did not leave his house alone except for his morning walks. On Thursday, he left home around 5 am and around 5.45 am, his friend Hanumant Jadhav informed the family that he was lying injured on the road. Soon, Vaibhav rushed to the spot and saw his father lying in a pool of blood. Appa was then rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead,” police said.

The body was taken to Sassoon hospital for postmortem. Doctors confirmed about eight bullet injuries, including two on his head, and multiple wounds of attack by sharp weapons on Appa’s body.

“The assailants laid a trap near his residence. They followed him while he was out for his morning walk. Suddenly, they fired at least three bullets and then attacked Appa several times with sharp weapons,” police said.

The incident created panic in Urali Kanchan. Police force was deployed in the region to prevent any untoward incident. Shops in Urali Kanchan were shut down for some time.

Police sources said Appa was operating a gang of over 50 people. He had as many as 51 criminal cases, against his name in Pune city and district.
