SEATED ON a chair in Samata Nagar police station on Tuesday, the eight-year-old twisted her fingers as she recalled the events of the previous night. The minor was telling the police how her father had murdered her mother and then hanged himself after he returned home from work.
The sole witness in the murder probe has told the police how her intoxicated father asked his children to sleep in the first-storey room of their home in Hanuman Nagar, Kandivli (East). Taking her brother Yuvraj (six) with her, Samiksha bolted the door of the room from inside.
“They were fighting and he started beating her,” Samiksha told the police officers in a video-recorded statement in Marathi. She alleged that she and her mother Surekha Fundarkar (32) were frequently beaten by her father Nitin (32), who worked as a driving instructor. “I saw him strangulating her. She was struggling to save herself and tried screaming,” Samiksha said, adding that she then saw her father slit her mother’s throat. All the while, her younger brother was asleep beside her. Nitin then stepped on the foot of the bed, threw a dupatta around his neck and hanged himself from the fan, Samisksha said in her statement.
It was only in the morning that the girl finally unlocked the door and rushed to her aunt’s house down the street. While Yuvraj is shock and is speaking very less, the police claimed the girl did not weep even when she called her aunt. “She was in shock. She cried only when we started taking her statement,” said senior inspector Dilip Yadav, Samta Nagar police. Nitin and Surekha had been married for more than eight years. A case of murder has been registered against Nitin. Officers said Nitin appeared to be insecure about his marriage.
