“I knew Rohith Vemula since 2012, I don’t think his suspension was the reason he killed himself,”Susheel Kumar, President of Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad at Hyderabad Central University , who has been charged with abetment to the Dalit scholar’s suicide, said in Mumbai on Friday.

Kumar was in the city to speak to the media and clear his stand on the issue of Vemula’s death. “Rohith Vemula was not a person who could commit suicide for small reasons such as suspension or scuffle with other students. Instead of making it a Dalit issue or caste discrimination case, a fair and systematic judicial probe should be conducted into the death. If I am found guilty, I am ready to face consequences,” Kumar said.

Kumar came to Mumbai to present his views because, he said, some of the most vehement protests over Vemula’s suicide and high levels of ‘politicisation’ of the issue, have been seen in the state.
