An Autorickshaw driver was allegedly beaten up by four BEST employees after they kidnapped him on Wednesday night in Goregaon.

According to police officers, the rickshaw driver was taken to the Oshiwara bus depot in the BEST bus from where he went to the Goregaon police station. The police have arrested one accused for assault and kidnapping.

This case follows a series of accidents involving BEST bus drivers. On June 4,a BEST bus mowed down a 22-year-old motorcycle rider in Malad (west). On the same day,a 52-year-old BEST bus driver was arrested for causing death due to negligence and rash driving from Dadar for allegedly running over a 17-year-old cyclist. The boy,Shubhav Shinde, was on his way to his tuition classes when the accident took place.

The latest incident occurred around 8 pm on Wednesday. According to the police,Dheeraj Avinash Singh (35) was driving his rickshaw on the Link Road and was going towards Siddharth College when a BEST bus tried to overtake him. The rickshaw was pushed to the left, which irked Singh.

Police said Singh stopped his rickshaw and started abusing the driver. Three men, also BEST employees who were in the bus,got down and began beating Singh, said the police.

At that time, there were only BEST employees in the bus as almost all the passengers had got off at Shashtri Nagar,a stop before the depot.

“Singh tried to protest but the four men overpowered him. They dragged him into the bus and took him to the Oshiwara bus depot,” said Arun Jadhav, senior police inspector of Goregaon police station.

According to the police, the BEST employees also assaulted Singh at the depot before releasing him. Singh, who suffered injuries, rushed to the Goregaon police station and registered a complaint against the four.

“We have registered a case of kidnapping and assault against the four BEST employees. We have arrested one of the accused identified as Virendra Chauhan and are on the lookout for the rest,” said Jadhav.

BEST Public Relations Officer N A Walavalkar said,“The driver has been arrested and a departmental enquiry has been initiated to find out the sequence of events.”
