The 41-year-old son of a retired Inspector General of Police in Punjab was arrested early on Monday for rash and drink-driving after he knocked down a hawker in Lokhandwala,Andheri (West).

The accused allegedly abused the duty officer and other police inspectors while being taken to the Versova police station. However, when presented in court on Monday morning,he alleged that he was harassed and beaten up by the police.

The accused identified as Paramveer Parminder Sandhu — who stays at Juhu Omkar building located on the Juhu-Versova Link road in Andheri (West) — was travelling in his Ford Endeavor SUV with a friend Poonam Sompat (30) at 1.20 am on Monday,Nandkumar Mhetar, senior police inspector of Versova police station said.

Sandhu had reached the Swami Samarth circle at Lokhandwala, when he allegedly lost control of his vehicle and rammed into Ram Prakash Sagar Singh, who was on a cycle.

Singh — who was heading towards his house in Santacruz — sustained injuries after he fell from his cycle due to the impact of the accident.

Mhetar said Sandhu who began fleeing the spot, was chased down by a journalist Abdul Kazi in his Tata Sumo and nabbed near the HDFC bank at Four Bungalows by locals.

Singh was taken to Cooper Hospital were he was discharged after treatment.

Police reached the spot and arrested Sandhu, who owns a film production company, and took him and his friend Sompat to the police station.

“When we brought Sandhu to the police station,he began abusing the duty officer claiming that he was the son of an IG. When we took him to the Cooper Hospital for medical examination,he abused the doctor as well. Sandhu did not allow his blood to be taken. However, the doctor confirmed that the accused was under the influence of alcohol,” Mhetar said.

The Versova police then arrested Sandhu for rash and drink-driving and abusing a public servant.

The police are now verifying documents of the vehicle to find out whether Sandhu is its owner. The police have also asked RTO officers to check the vehicle and submit their report.

Police said when Sandhu was taken to the Andheri court on Monday morning,he alleged that three police officers held him at the spot and beat him. Sandhu has been remanded in police custody for a day.

“The court has ordered to get his medical examination done and inquire whether his allegations are correct. We,however, have CCTV recordings of Sandhu abusing and shouting at the policemen, flaunting his father’s name. We also have witnesses like Sompat and doctor from the Cooper Hospital,” Mhetar said.
