As part of a probe into a case of kidnap and rape of a minor, twelve possible suspects were asked by investigators to walk 500 metres over a period of time to match it to the way an accused was seen purportedly walking with the victim on the CCTV cameras at Wadala police station.
The suspects were also asked to spit in a direction as the accused was seen spitting tobacco in one of the screen grabs, police said.
On the night of April 21, a 5-year-old resident of Wadala was kidnapped from near her house by an unidentified accused who took her to Antop Hill’s Sangam Nagar area and allegedly raped her at a ground. The victim was taken from her locality at 10.30 pm and was found nearly two hours later by nearby residents. There are two CCTV cameras that captured images of the accused wearing a white shirt, blue jeans and shoes and is seen with the minor, police said. On one camera, the accused is briefly seen carrying the victim in his arms entering the compound of a residential building, walking past three children to his right side and on the second camera, the accused is seen spitting to his left side on an Antop Hill street.

Police said over the past two nights the police has rounded up 12 possible suspects, who fit the physical description of the accused and are trying to match the suspects’ movements with that of the accused caught on camera on the night of incident.
“In the night time when there are few people, we have conducted this new kind of ‘identification parade’. We made the suspects wear clothes similar to those the accused wore on the night of the incident,” said inspector Sunil Kadam with the Wadala T T police.
A senior police officer with the Wadala TT police said “the accused looks relaxed and comfortable while carrying the victim. We have observed that his stride is peculiar, he does not look to be hurriedly walking with the victim or in any sort of panic.” According to Suhas Garud, senior police inspector of the Wadala TT, the suspects are even asked to spit to their left side while walking from Pentagalaxy Society, as the accused was seen doing the same on the one of the CCTV cameras, possibly spitting tobacco on the ground.
The accused is still at large and has been charged by the police for rape, kidnapping and attempt to murder under the IPC and relevant sections of Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act. Although this is third such case in the last couple of months, that the police is investigating a minor picked up from near her home by an unknown accused and then allegedly raped, zonal deputy commissioner of police Ashok Dudhe said that the accused arrested in the previous cases are not connected with the accused in this case.
