A 38-Year old Pune man ‘surrendered’ at a police station here, claiming he killed a man. He submitted himself to the police 48 hours after the incident. However, with no case registered yet, in Pune, matching the  description, the Vakola police will have a detainee with no case to book till a body is found.

Utpam Gade, a resident of Sindhudurg, Pune was found sitting in front of Vakola police station since Thursday morning. Later, he was approached by an officer, to whom Gade announced he had come to surrender after killing a man on Tuesday. Since morning, personnel at Vakola have been checking if any case of missing or murder has been reported in any Pune jurisdictional station to verify his story.

In his statement at Vakola Police Station, Gade, who is unemployed, told the police he had been having marital problems. On Tuesday after an argument with his wife, he had left home and walked towards Sindhudurg fort. He told the police he was “irritated” and wanted to find a peaceful place. Gade, then, went towards some shrubs at the fort’s inner flank to relieve himself, where he found a couple, who did not notice him at first. But when the man saw Gade, he allegedly slapped him. Frustrated and feeling insulted, Gade is alleged to have picked a rock and smashed the man’s head, killing him instantly. The woman ran away. Gade then boarded a long distance train and landed in Mumbai on Tuesday night.

“For two days, he says he roamed the streets. He seems to have spent Wednesday at Juhu chowpaty. He then walked east and got on to the Skywalk on the flyover at the western express highway,” said an officer. “No case has been reported with the Haveli police. They are now looking at the spot to verify details,” said R Mule, senior police inspector. “Gade told us that he had flung the victim’s body in the bushes before fleeing.”
