Inquiries have been initiated at Antonio De Souza High School,Byculla, and Sacred Heart High School,Worli,by the education department after parents alleged that a large number of students have been detained intentionally in Class IX this year by the two schools.
While 151 out of 298 failed at Antonio De Souza High School,79 out of 230 students met a similar fate at Sacred Heart. Officials from the education department visited both schools on Friday to examine their records.
We have started our inquiries in both matters. Our teams are going through office records of the two schools. We are assessing how this situation arose. The schools are cooperating with us. We are also checking the evaluation records of the students. As of now,we have not reached any conclusion. We will take a decision on both schools only after we finish examining and analysing the records, said B Mane, education inspector, south zone. The department officials are scrutinising the marks the students have obtained at both schools through the year in the various written exams,if marking was done properly, whether there were any errors while drawing up the results and if rules were followed.
After analysing the data and official records, the education department is expected to take a decision by Monday or Tuesday. We are likely to decide what is to be done next by Monday or Tuesday, said Mane.
Several parents had claimed that the schools have failed the students to ensure a good show in the Class X board exams.
The parents had subsequently demanded that a third party,a fact-finding committee, must be set up to investigate the matter and that the papers be re-checked.
