The Vangaon police on Monday arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the murder of a senior citizen couple four days ago. The police said that the accused was traced to Surat after he made the mistake of using a cellphone that he had stolen from the house of his victims and apprehended.
The couple, Nausher (80) and Nargis Irani (79), were found dead at their residence four days ago. Nausher’s head was bashed in with a stone, while Nargis’s throat was slit. The house was ransacked and valuables, including cash and cellphones, were missing.
The police said that the accused has been identified as Ravi Thakur (30), whose father had worked at the Irani residence as domestic help for 25 years before he died four years ago.
“Two days ago, Thakur switched on Nargis’s cellphone, which he had taken with him. We were tracking the phone and after tracing the location, we arrested Thakur from Surat,” said Superintendent of Police Suvez Haq, Palghar police.
According to the police, Thakur owed lakhs of rupees to various people in Surat, and was in desperate need of money, as his creditors were constantly asking him to return their money.
On Thursday last week, Thakur went to the farmhouse in Vangaon where the Iranis stayed, murdered them both and took whatever valuables he could find in the house, police said.
The police picked up Thakur from Surat and brought him to Mumbai on Monday. After being produced in court, he was remanded in police custody till December 24. The police are probing whether he committed the crime alone or whether he had help from any accomplices, said an officer.
