Biker hit man, tempo driver ran over him; fled when he died on way to hospital.

The Goregaon police officers, investigating the mystery behind an unidentified body found in a tempo near Vigyor school in the area on Tuesday evening, have found that the man was involved in an accident in Powai on Monday.

The police found that the tempo driver, who had allegedly run over Golu Devidas Gawai (25),had left the body and fled after the victim died while he was taking him to a hospital.

The police said Gawai was found dead in the driver’s seat of the tempo with bruises and cut marks on his body. The body was sent for an autopsy to Cooper Hospital in Vile Parle late on Tuesday. The doctors found a piece of paper in Gawai’s pocket with the phone number of one Tambi scribbled on it. Police officers said Tambi turned out to be Gawai’s friend, who revealed the victim’s identity and that he worked with Ambika Tankers.

After they discovered Gawai’s body, the police officers traced the owner of the tempo (MH 04 FJ 2441) to Lokhandwala. The owner,Laljee Yadav, told the police that Sushilkumar Pandey, the driver, had called him up on Tuesday and said he was beaten up and the tempo was robbed by a gang. Yadav said after the phone call,he found that Pandey had switched off his phone and he had been trying to contact him to register a complaint.

“With Tambi’s help,we got in touch with the owner of Ambika Travels, who told us that he had been contacted after his employee met with an accident in Powai. Gawai’s employer said on reaching the Powai police station,he met a traffic constable who had witnessed the accident. The constable told him that the victim was rushed to a hospital, but the employer failed to locate him in the nearby hospitals. After he was called to the Goregaon police station,Gawai’s employer identified his body,” said senior police inspector Arun Jadhav of Goregaon police station.

Based on the statement of Gawai’s employer, the Goregaon police contacted their Powai counterparts, who told them that Pandey was last seen rushing the victim to the hospital.

Investigations revealed that around 5.30 pm on Monday,Gawai was walking near Milind Nagar in Powai when he was hit by a speeding motorcyclist from behind. He fell down and was run over by a tempo and dragged for around 15 feet.

Traffic constable Shivnath Masal, who was present at the spot, intercepted the motorcycle and the tempo drivers. After confiscating the licences of the bike rider,N Badani, and tempo driver,Sushilkumar Pandey,Masal asked them to rush Gawai to a nearby hospital. However,Gawai succumbed to his injuries on the way,the police said.

The duo panicked and allegedly abandoned the body in the tempo at Motilal Nagar junction in Goregaon (West). While Badani went into hiding at his house,Pandey called up his employer and fled.

The Goregaon police arrested Badani on the basis of his licence details and handed him over to the Powai police.
