Congress MP from Mumbai North Sanjay Nirupam on Saturday threatened to launch a stir outside Reliance Energy’s head office in Kandivili (Mumbai) if power tariff was not reduced in the metropolis before January 13.

Addressing a press conference, the Congress MP said the power distribution company was levying a variety of unjustified charges on consumers and demanded that these be withdrawn.

“A fixed charge of Rs 100 for residential and Rs 250 for commercial consumers over and above the bill for their power consumption should be immediately withdrawn,” Nirupam said. The MP also questioned the imposition of regulatory asset charges on the consumers. “Why should the consumers be liable to pay for the company’s assets? There should be some clarity on how long they will have to pay and why.”

Claiming that the government was considering to take up the issue raised by him,Nirupam said,“The fixed charge has been introduced in the last couple of years. Secondly,in the name of regulatory assets, for Reliance to maintain infrastructure in Mumbai,Rs 522 and Rs 600 are being charged from consumers whose consumption is below 500 units.”

Nirupam has been raising the issue following the Aam Aadmi Party government’s decision to slash power tariff in Delhi by almost 50 per cent.

“CM Prithviraj Chavan has assured me he would also look in the matter,” he said.
