Vafi Mohsin Khan (23) alias Sonu, rumoured to be actor Laila Khans fiance, claimed on Thursday that he had never met her and alleged that his name had been pushed into the case by his fathers former business associate. Vafi gave his statement to the Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Wednesday and met senior Crime Branch officers, who quizzed him about his alleged proximity with Laila and her family.
Vafi is a Dubai-based Indian entrepreneur. He told Newsline that he had come back to the city after his father told him to give his statement to the Crime Branch and clear the air about his suspected relation with the starlet.
I have never met Laila or anyone from her family. I have just seen her in the movie in which she starred opposite Rajesh Khanna. I have told the Crime Branch that, and I have just come to the city to clear my name. I have also given the Crime Branch my e-mail address,my Facebook address and both my mobile phone numbers so that they can get call detail records which will prove that I do not know Laila or anyone from her family, said Vafi.
Alleging that he was being dragged into the controversy by his fathers former business associate,Vafi said that he has proof to show that he was being targeted.
I will be showing evidence to the Crime Branch to prove that I am being targetted. I have evidence to reveal that I am being dragged into the controversy by my fathers former business partner, said Vafi.
Vafi also said,he submitted his passport details to the Crime Branch. My paper work is all clear. I am just an entrepreneur who is being pulled into something I have nothing to do with, he said.
I got engaged on February 8 last year and married my wife Yasmin on 12 February,2011. How can I promise marriage if I am going to be engaged? he said.
Incidentally, the Crime Branch has said Laila and her family had left for Igatpuri on February 7 last year.
Vafi said he was a student of Bandras MMK College and then moved to Dubai to pursue his BBA course from the American University of Sharjah in 2006. He said he came back to Mumbai in 2008 and finished his course through the Mumbai University.
I started a club in Juhu in 2009 called Twist, but shut it in 2011 because I was facing losses. I have been in Dubai since and I set up my own business in June this year, he said.
Crime Branch officers said they were still investigating Vafis role. We have not yet given him a clean chit in the case. We are investigating if he is in any way involved in the case and if we find any proof of his involvement, necessary action will be taken, said a Crime Branch officer.
