A driver, who allegedly robbed a businessman of his gold chain worth Rs 75000, was nabbed after a resident of the area where the robbery took place recognised the accused and revealed his identity, as well as address, to the victim. Armed with this information, the victim approached the police and the accused was booked within 24 hours of the crime.
The Deonar police said Balasaheb Bedkale (37) was on his way home on Monday in an autorickshaw when an unidentified man stopped the auto in Govandi. Bedkale leaned out of the auto and asked the man why he was blocking the way, and the man went around to the passenger seat, started an argument, snatched Bedkale’s gold chain and fled.
“Bedkale went back to the scene of the crime later in the day and started making inquiries with residents of the area regarding the incident. A man staying in the area told him that he knew who the robber was. The man revealed the information on condition of anonymity, and told Bedkale the name and address of the robber,” said Senior Police Inspector M B Vichare of Deonar police station.
Bedkale then went to the house of the suspect, identified as Rahul Rohire (27) in Govandi, and tried to find him, but in vain. He then approached the Deonar police, who registered a complaint of robbery against Rohire. “After making inquiries among his acquaintances, we obtained information about his whereabouts and picked him up from the same area on Monday evening,” Vichare added.
Rohire works as a driver, and the police are finding out if he has a past criminal record. He has been charged for robbery and assault under the IPC, and has been remanded to police custody till May 15, the police said.
