The Shiv Sena now wants the crucial Middle Vaitarna dam to be named after Jagannath Sunkersett — a prominent philanthropist of Mumbai. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had last week completed the major project that is expected to augment the city’s water supply by around 455 million litres daily (mld).

Shiv Sena corporator and standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale said,“As this dam stands for the development of the city,it should be named after the prominent leader who has helped build the foundations of this city.

Jagannath Sunkersett played a significant role in contributing to the wealth of the city.

He carried out major development works such as bridges and educational institutions. Naming Middle Vaitarna dam after him will ensure that his name is not forgotten in history.”

The dam, estimated to cost about Rs 2,700 crore, was implemented as part of the Mumbai IV Water Supply Project and has partly been funded under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). With its completion, the civic body will be able to almost meet the city’s water requirement of around 3,900 mld. Currently, the city gets only 3,400 mld water. The proposal to rename the Middle Vaitarna dam is expected to come up in a group leaders’ meeting in the civic body next week. This is not the first time that the Sena has demanded naming a prominent public place or project after Jangannath Sunkersett. Last year, amidst demands from various parties for naming the Mumbai Central Station after their leaders,Sena had demanded that Mumbai Central station be named after Sunkersett. A proposal for the same had also been sent to the railway authorities.

Meanwhile, parliamentarian Sanjay Nirupam said on Sunday that he had demanded renaming the Mumbai Central station after late Congress leader Rajiv Gandhi. Stating that there was no politics at play here,Nirupam said he had first raised the issue in the Lok Sabha, following which he submitted a memorandum to the Railway Ministry. He said Mumbai MPs Milind Deora,Eknath Gaikwad and Priya Dutt had supported his demand. Gandhi, whose death anniversary falls on May 21,was born in Mumbai not far from the Mumbai Central railway station and had also given special attention to the development of the city during his tenure as prime minister,he added.

The party has already supported a proposal seeking to rename Dadra station after Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. Nirupam said the Grant Road station could be named after Sunkersett.
