The Azad Maidan police arrested a BMC executive engineer, KH Yeerme, late Monday night, a week after he was suspended along with five other engineers from the roads department of the civic body.
Yeerme was given a showcause notice and later suspended over collecting fines from the contractors named in the Rs 352-crore road scam.
“We have made the arrest but further investigations will now be carried out,” confirmed a senior police officer from Azad Maidan police station. He did not comment on whether more arrests are expected soon.
Until now, police have arrested 25 others in the road scam case. Following an inquiry into 34 roads, the BMC had registered an FIR with police, which set up a Special Investigation Team probe the multi-crore scam.
The BMC has also suspended another executive engineer, VV Achrekar, who also worked from western suburbs along with Yeerme.
Departmental inquiry, meanwhile, is underway against four other engineers attached with Roads department of BMC.
Earlier this month, the police had written to BMC seeking clarification on whether the penalties can be collected after registering an FIR.
In BMC’s probe, all six engineers were found at fault for collecting fines from contractors after the FIR.
In the FIR, BMC has listed six contractors — RPS Infraprojects, KR Construction, Jay Kumar, Relcon Infraprojects, RK Madhani and Mahavir Infrastructure.
