A 28-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by eight persons in Amboli late on Monday night. The woman, according to police, was out for house-hunting with her husband when the incident is suspected to have taken place at the residence of a broker. So far, seven accused have been arrested and sent to police remand till November 4. The police are on the lookout for the eighth one. The victim’s condition is said to be stable.
Mumbai police spokesperson DCP Ashok Dudhe in a statement said that the woman along with her husband was looking for a house in a slum locality in Andheri West. The incident happened when the woman and her husband stayed back at a lady’s house after hunting for houses in a Shamnagar slum. It was here that eight persons from the locality are suspected to have raped the woman.
The officer added that the victim is stable and further mentioned that of the eight accused, one has a prior criminal record. The accused are in the age group of 20 to 25. An officer from Amboli police station said that the accused will be produced in Bandra Court on Tuesday afternoon to seek their custody. “We will be seeking their custodial interrogation to find out who hatched the conspiracy. We will also be checking CCTVs in the area and will seek technical assistance,” said an officer from Amboli police station.
The accused as of now have been arrested on the charges of gangrape and causing hurt. The police said they have leads on the eighth accused and should be able to arrest him soon.
