THE Mumbai Police Crime Branch was on Tuesday preparing to get Ashwin Agarwal alias Tinku Mandi on transit remand. Tinku was arrested along with S Sreesanth,Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan early on May 16.

Interrogators suspect CSK team principal Gurunath Meiyappan might have been passing on sensitive information to Vindoo Dara Singh, who would pass the inputs to Tinku, through whom betting cartels in Dubai,Pakistan and India would get to know.

Crime Branch officials said Tinku’s interrogation is important because he and Rajasthan-based bookie Chandresh Jain alias Jupiter are the only two links between the cases being pursued by the police of Mumbai and Delhi.

Tinku and Jupiter were declared wanted accused when the Crime Branch arrested Ramesh Vyas and his two associates from a house in Kalbadevi, where they were allegedly facilitating conversations between bookies in India and those in Pakistan and Dubai.

“While most of the arrested bookies were in touch with bookies in Pakistan and Dubai through Ramesh Vyas,Tinku and Jupiter were the only ones who were in direct touch with them. They were also in contact with players, which would give us an entry into the fixing aspect of the case. All the evidence recovered by us so far only points to betting and not fixing,” said a Crime Branch officer.

Police plan to interrogate Tinku along with Vindoo and Meiyappan.

“Tinku is currently in judicial custody, and the Delhi court has ordered that he be produced in the Esplanade court in Mumbai on or before June 4,which is when we will seek his custody. Our officials are currently in Delhi to coordinate his arrival in Mumbai,” an officer said.
