A five-year-old boy died in Kurla after falling into a ditch on Thursday morning. The police have initiated action against the private contractor who left the ditch unguarded. Officers said the incident took place at Hanuman Nagar slum colony near the railway crossing in Kurla East around 11 am, when local boy Mohammad Amir Sayyad had gone to catch fish.

The police said that the ditch had been left unguarded during the construction of a toilet block. “The ditch was very deep and had four to five feet of dirty water inside,” said Pramod Khoparde, senior inspector, Nehru Nagar police station.

“The boy was pulled out of the ditch soon after he fell and rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, but he died of drowning,” Khoparde added.

The senior inspector said that the contractor had failed to cordon off the ditch and place a warning sign near it. “A case of negligence will be registered against the contractor,” he said.
