A 21-year-old motorist was arrested by the Andheri police on Saturday for allegedly knocking down an on-duty traffic constable. The incident took place on the Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road when the biker,Kaleem Shaikh, was on his way towards his house in Dharavi.

An officer of the Andheri police said the constable, identified as Shashikant Dhumal (36),was on duty at the Satamwadi Junction in Andheri (East).

“Dhumal is posted with the Airport Division of the traffic police and was on duty at the Satamwadi Junction. While he was working on Saturday,Shaikh approached the signal and was promptly asked by Dhumal to stop as the signal was red. Shaikh did not listen to him and tried jumping the signal. Dhumal then blocked Shaikh’s path and blew his whistle, but even that did not deter Shaikh,” said an officer.

The officer said Shaikh tried speeding away and rammed his motorcycle into Dhumal.

“The impact of the collision was such that Shaikh was thrown off his bike. Dhumal fell down on the ground and was injured. As he tried escaping the scene, those who witnessed the accident nabbed him. He was later arrested,” said the officer.

Dhumal was rushed to a hospital for treatment, where doctors said he suffered a fracture on the right hand.

“Shaikh has been booked. Dhumal is recuperating in hospital,” said the officer.
