The problems here are social in nature. Such incidents stem out of unstable socio-economic conditions and the inability of parents to cope with parenthood. This is also not something that the police can prevent. The only preventive measure here is a coordinated effort between the state government and bodies liked the Child Welfare Department to provide counselling and other help, said K Subramaniam, former Director General of Police,Maharashtra.
There were also six cases where children were killed after being raped,12 cases where they were killed for ransom and eight cases where the girl child was killed as her parents did not want a daughter.
Police said there were numerous cases where teenagers, mostly 16 to 18 years of age,had consensual sex and cases of rape were registered later. Cases of teens of the same age group eloping were treated as kidnappings, officers said.
