The Dharavi police have arrested one Krushna Vaity,59,who had jumped bail in a diamond robbery case 32 years ago. Vaity was arrested from near Mahim in central Mumbai on Tuesday evening.
DCP (Zone 5) Dhananjay Kulkarni said Vaity was wanted in connection with a case registered in Dharavi in 1980. The accused was wanted along with nine others in a robbery case. He was arrested on Tuesday night after we received a tipoff.
Dharavi police officers said Vaity and his accomplices were arrested in 1980 after the case was registered. They were booked under Sections 395 (robbery) and 397 (robbery with intent to cause grievous hurt) of the IPC. They were produced in the court and given bail the same year. However,Vaity and his aides skipped court hearings. A non-bailable warrant was issued against them the same year, senior police inspector Ashok Survegandh said. While his accomplices were traced,Vaity had been evading arrest.
He is a fisherman and would be out at sea. Officers posted here then either retired or were transferred while Vaity remained at large. On Tuesday evening,we got reliable information that he was coming near Mahim and a trap was laid, Survegandh said.
Head constable Prakash Shirke, who was a new recruit when the incident happened, could identify him. Vaity was produced in the court on Wednesday and remanded in judicial custody till April 11.
