A man sleeping outside his hut was killed by a reversing tanker near the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Santa Cruz on Tuesday night, the police said.

Victim Subhash Gore (35) was employed as a labourer at an under-construction building and had built a hut on the plot.

At 10.15 pm, Gore was sleeping outside his hut at the entrance to the plot when the tanker driver reversed the vehicle into the plot to negotiate turning in the narrow road, the police said. “As there was no light nearby, the driver could not see Gore sleeping outside the hut and drove straight on to his legs,” said Mahadeo Wavale, Senior Inspector, Vakola police station. Gore was rushed to V N Desai Hospital but doctors there declared him dead before admission as he had lost a lot of blood, the police said.

The driver, Mohammad Haroon Khan, was charged with causing death due to negligence and rash driving, and placed under arrest.
