The Sahar police have arrested a 24-year-old for man allegedly abetting the suicide of a 17 year-old-girl. Police said he had stalked her and insisted that she marry him.

The girl, a resident of Sahar, is believed to have hanged herself, after the man threatened to rape her if she refused his proposal. Police said the suspect, Amin Patel, had got the victim’s cellphone number through a common friend. He had never met her in person, they said.

Patel allegedly sent text messages to the girl and called her at odd hours. “Initially, the girl ignored Patel’s messages but when he began sending her lewd SMSes, she told her family. She had turned him down several times over the phone but Patel was adamant,” said inspector Raghunath Dalvi.

Four months ago, after the girl told him to stop harassing her, Patel began threatening her, saying he would enter her house, abduct and rape her, police said. Irked by Patel’s threats, the girl’s family got the girl engaged. Patel began to then call her from different phone numbers and abuse her, police said. On March 16, after Patel allegedly threatened to rape her if she got married, the girl committed suicide. Police said Patel fled from his residence at MIDC in Andheri (East). “We arrested him on Wednesday,” said Dalvi.
