A 25-year-old man was killed and two others injured after a group of 10 people allegedly attacked them with swords and choppers in Jogeshwari (east) late Monday night. The police have arrested two suspects and said a past enmity was the cause behind the clash.

Meghwadi police said the deceased, identified as Vinod Sawant, was in the Sanjay Gandhi Nagar area of Meghwadi along with his two friends when the suspects accosted them around 11:30 pm on Monday. An argument broke out between the two groups over a cellphone. “The accused claims Sawant sold him the phone at a higher price, which angered him and his friends. We are still checking if there is another motive or reason behind the attack as none of their statements seem to match,” said a police officer.

While Sawant was arguing with one of the suspects, the others allegedly attacked him and his friends with choppers.

“When Sawant turned around to see who had attacked him, others pounced on him and his friends with swords. Their cries for help attracted the attention of residents of the area, who rushed to the scene to check was was going on,” said a police officer.

Sawant was rushed to Cooper Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The police arrested Sandeep Barwa and Vijay Yadav, who have been booked for murder and attempt to murder under the IPC. The two others injured in the incident, identified as Manoj Pujari and Krishna, are recuperating.
